The Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT) is this year celebrating its 50th anniversary and the organisation will be marking this milestone with a series of special events throughout the year.

The passing of Law No.72 of 1958 brought the Jamaica National Trust Commission (JNTC), the forerunner to the current Jamaica National Heritage Trust, into being and this year the organisation intends to make Jamaicans even more knowledgeable about their past and the organisation that is mandated to protect that past.

Among the JNHT's planned events is a travelling exhibition to all the parishes. This exhibition will feature historical information specific to each parish as well as information about the organisation. The JNHT will also be hosting a 50th anniversary banquet/ball that will be part of a renewed thrust to raise funds towards establishing a preservation fund to award grants and loans for repair and development of heritage sites.

There are also plans for a journal that will feature articles on the topical issues relating to the organisation. Among the topics to be discussed are those relating to the Law and the preservation of heritage; the continued relevance of the JNHT in today's Jamaica; heritage tourism and its impact on Jamaica; bringing heritage education to the youth and Jamaica's heritage in architecture. The organisation will also participate in a service of thanksgiving as well as produce a newspaper feature to mark the anniversary.
