JNHT pushes heritage sites at JAPEX 2010

May 13, 2010

The Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT) is trying to introduce more visitors to its heritage sites through participation in the annual Jamaica Product Exchange (JAPEX), the premier event in the local travel industry. The Trust wants to capitalize on the growing heritage tourism market to earn increased revenues from its sites while at the same time promoting Jamaica's heritage.

Director of Communication and Marketing at the JNHT Richard Kildare, said the Trust hopes to be a lead agent in the area of developing the heritage tourism product. "This is not just for our business but also for the promotion of our culture internationally," Mr. Kildare said.

"We have a lot of people demonstrating interest in our sites. There is heightened interest from local and international tour operators who are enquiring about package promotions," he said.
In a bid to enhance the overall heritage tourism product the Trust has recently completed an upgrade of the Rio Nuevo Battle Site in St. Mary adding a museum to the beautiful landscaping. It has also upgraded its Fort Charles and Historic Naval Hospital sites in Port Royal through sponsorship from the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF) and CHASE.

The JNHT currently operates heritage tourism sites at Seville Heritage Park, St. Ann; Fort Charles, Port Royal; Rio Nuevo Battle site, St. Mary and Blenheim, Hanover. All of these sites currently operate museums where visitors can get a synopsis of Jamaica's rich history.
