What is Emancipation Jubilee? Click to download flyer
Emancipation Day is the day that enslaved persons were officially free from slavery and apprenticeship. Although the Law of Abolition was passed in 1834, fully fledged freedom was not materialized until 1838 and thus Emancipation Day was a reason for rejoicing and it became a yearly remembrance and thanksgiving
festival.

Emancipation Jubilee is a major celebration organized by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust at Seville Heritage Park, St. Ann to honour our African ancestors and their contributions towards the free society that we now enjoy. The annual event began on July 31, 1997 when the remains of four ex-slaves were re-interred on the Seville property after they were excavated from the Slave Village on the property and extensively studied by Archaeologists at Syracuse University. The following year, one of the remains was repatriated to Ghana and buried there. Since 1997, the JNHT has commemorated the event with a cultural package that showcases the African retentions of our heritage.

The aim of this celebration is to bring greater awareness and acceptance both locally and globally to the many struggles of our fore parents and to exhibit the retentions in our society. The themes and teachings of the event will be conveyed in a positive atmosphere allowing patrons to fully appreciate and recognize the significant contribution that this part of history played in our development as a people, nation and race.

Seville Heritage Park in St. Ann will once again come alive with the pulsating sounds of traditional African drumming and other musical delights as the Jamaica National Heritage Trust stages its annual 'Emancipation Jubilee' on Thursday, July 31, 2008. This is the twelveth staging of this exciting event which is being held in celebration of the African ancestors on the grounds of the Seville Great House.

This year's Emancipation Jubilee promises to be an exciting mix of old and new. The old of course is represented in the traditional performances of the Kumina and Dinki Mini groups and the ever present 'chocolate tea' that has become a staple for patrons as they sip from the enamel mugs- some older than the event if one were to judge from their appearances over the years.

Among the new will be the day and night version of the event to accommodate more of an educational aspects. Among activities planned for the afternoon are: storytelling by veteran storyteller Amina Blackwood Meeks; A dramatization of the story of enslavement and journey to freedom as scripted by the Dramatic Arts Dept. of the EXED Community College. There will also be numerous exhibitions on the grounds of the Seville plantation house, all highlighting aspects of the heritage.

At midnight there will be a dramatic reading of the Emancipation Proclamation following which the Live Wyaa Band will rock the stage as artistes and crowd celebrate the Jubilee of our ancestors gaining their freedom.

Persons who look forward to the traditional folk forms will get their fill with the Port Morant Kumina group from St. Thomas who will take them through till daylight.

The Emancipation Jubilee is the coming together of traditional folk forms in celebration of the African ancestors. The event seeks to educate Jamaicans about various aspects of this aspect of their cultural heritage in a colourful package and relaxed atmosphere.

The Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT) is this year celebrating its 50th anniversary and the organisation will be marking this milestone with a series of special events throughout the year.

The passing of Law No.72 of 1958 brought the Jamaica National Trust Commission (JNTC), the forerunner to the current Jamaica National Heritage Trust, into being and this year the organisation intends to make Jamaicans even more knowledgeable about their past and the organisation that is mandated to protect that past.

Among the JNHT's planned events is a travelling exhibition to all the parishes. This exhibition will feature historical information specific to each parish as well as information about the organisation. The JNHT will also be hosting a 50th anniversary banquet/ball that will be part of a renewed thrust to raise funds towards establishing a preservation fund to award grants and loans for repair and development of heritage sites.

There are also plans for a journal that will feature articles on the topical issues relating to the organisation. Among the topics to be discussed are those relating to the Law and the preservation of heritage; the continued relevance of the JNHT in today's Jamaica; heritage tourism and its impact on Jamaica; bringing heritage education to the youth and Jamaica's heritage in architecture. The organisation will also participate in a service of thanksgiving as well as produce a newspaper feature to mark the anniversary.

The Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT) will be having an Open Day at Fort Charles, Port Royal on Friday, June 6, 2008 in observance of 316th anniversary of the earthquake that destroyed sections of the historic town. The Open Day will be held under the theme "Facing The Earthquake: The Port Royal Experience" and will begin at 10:00 a.m.

The JNHT is using the opportunity to remind Jamaicans of the potentially devastating effect of an earthquake and the importance of being prepared so as to minimize this effect.

The organisation will be facilitating tours to its Fort Charles heritage site, offering students and visitors a first hand view of the destructive nature of an earthquake. There will also be exhibitions from the Jamaica Red Cross, Ministry of Health, NEPA, Office of Disaster Preparedness (ODPEM) among others. In addition there will be film screenings, earthquake drills, panel discussions, cultural performances and live radio broadcast from the site.

Fort Charles in its heyday was almost completely surrounded by water. It was constructed like a ship with a 17th century floating castle at the bow. However in the 1692 earthquake, the fort sank 31/2 feet into the ground. In the 1907 earthquake there was further damage when the structure of the Giddy House was shifted to its present angle which accounts for the giddy sensation that is felt when one enters the building.

At a few minutes before 12 midday on Tuesday, June 7, 1692, an earthquake struck the city of Port Royal. A huge tidal wave destroyed ships in the harbour and carried one of the ships into the middle of the town. Many of the buildings were destroyed and most of the city disappeared into the sea. Over 2,000 people died and more than 3,000 had serious injuries. Many of the victims were swallowed up by the earth.

According to the Wikipedia Encyclopedia, brown bag seminars are usually held by schools and universities and governmental institutions. They involve lectures, presentations, or talks by researchers, mostly professors about their ongoing research.

Brown bag seminars normally run an hour or two. Originally they were scheduled around lunchtime and participants were encouraged to bring their own lunch in a brown bag.

It was this same principle that Mrs. Laleta Davis Mattis, Executive Director at the Trust had in mind when she started the brown bag sessions. Brown Bag at the Trust is quite special as it is held in the old Legislative Chambers, which houses the piano on which the National anthem was composed.

In January, Fay Ellington, veteran broadcaster and consummate communicator, gave a scrumptious serving of cultural delight by dragging the memory of those who were old enough to remember the "shut pan" and sung along with her to Mr. Tate's favourite "mi yellow yam."

February added an old story charm through the skills of acclaimed storyteller, Amina Blackwood Meeks. Everyone present stopped eating as they became enthralled with the stories of Jamaica's heritage and culture. Definitely, she is a must come back especially since she is an ex-officio member of the JNHT team.

To close the quarter, Dr. Glenda Simms, Gender Consultant, served up a delightfully delicious plate of "The Role of Women in the Preservation of Heritage." We were so satisfied, we immediately felt hungry for more and invited her back (hopefully soon) so we can feast a bit more.

When next she will appear is something you will find out at one of these wonderful brown bag sessions!

Brown Bag session took to the road in April with a tour of the National Gallery and in May there was a special Child's Month feature.

Hundreds of students were among the visitors who participated in the Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT) annual Open house on February 26 & 27, 2008 at the organisation's Headquarters House offices.

The visitors toured Headquarters House where they learnt the rich history of the site that served at one time as the island's Military Headquarters as well as the Legislative Assembly. They visited the Conservation Lab where they viewed first hand how the artefacts are conserved and preserved.

There were several exhibitions on the premises featuring different aspects of the organisation's work. Students seemed particularly fascinated with a skull of a Taino that was on display as well the many pieces of artefacts recovered from the sunken city of Port Royal. Also on show were the various equipment that the JNHT archaeologists use as they go about gathering information about the past.

There were various lecture presentations throughout the two days featuring different aspects of Jamaica's heritage and the role of the JNHT in unearthing and researching that heritage. Communication specialist and storyteller Amina Blackwood-Meeks also had the students and teachers enthralled during a storytelling session on day one.

The Open Day was held with the aim of allowing Jamaicans to see how the JNHT works in carrying out its functions of promoting, preserving, researching and developing Jamaica's material cultural heritage.
The JNHT is a government agency with responsibility for declaring or designating places and objects of historical value as National Monuments or Protected National Heritage.

The Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT) in collaboration with the Spanish-Jamaican Foundation, and the Spanish Embassy launched the Heritage Trails of Jamaica project at the Seville Heritage Park in St. Ann on Friday, April 4, 2008 with the unveiling of the first signboard.

Acknowledging Jamaica's rich cultural heritage, Spanish Ambassador Jesus Silva noted that the project is, "not so much about Spanish history [but instead] about Jamaica and Jamaica's Heritage." He pointed out that the signboards are "a way of offering new activities for tourism."

Information, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Olivia Grange pledged the support of her ministry noting that the project signified the kind of work necessary to enhance the tourism product. "I welcome this addition that uses heritage and culture to expand the tourism platform," Minister Grange said.

The minister noted that "the idea of a heritage trail provides us as well as our visitors with opportunities to revisit or discover the various paths taken in our development. It allows for the discovery of ancestral pride as well as for the negotiation of the process that can lead to reconnections to the past."

She also expressed the view that "it is our culture that draws persons to our shores and determines their desire to return."

Executive Director of the Jamaica National Heritage Trust Mrs. Laleta Davis-Mattis in her remarks noted that "Heritage and culture form the core of who we are." She went on to explain that the JNHT was excited to be part of the heritage trail project as the organization could use the opportunity to "educate more persons about Jamaica's history and the experiences that helped to shape our nation. At the same time we would be helping them to understand the role that heritage preservation plays in developing the nation." She later appealed for private investors to partner with the JNHT to develop more projects for the benefit of the Jamaican people.

The Heritage Trails project will see a series of storyboards being erected at various historically significant sites across the island. The first set will constitute the Spanish Trail and includes signs at New Seville, Rio Bueno, Rio Nuevo, Spanish Town, among others. They will be linked to form a trail and complemented by a Jamaican Heritage map as well as accompanying brochures which document Jamaica's various historical sites.

Columbus Preparatory School in St. Ann delivered a musical treat in Spanish thereby adding authentic Spanish flair to the festivities. A cocktail reception and lunch followed at the beautiful Grand Bahia Principe Hotel, which was one of the sponsors of the project.

Among those in attendance were Minister Olivia Grange, Spanish Ambassador Jesus Silva, JNHT Executive Director Mrs. Laleta Davis-Mattis, former Minister of Tourism Aloun Assamba, Mayor Ivan Anderson and Member of Parliament Shaine Robinson.

Architect Paul Thorbourne of the architectural firm Paul Thorbourne Associates, has been declared the winner of the Hugh Shearer Monument Design Competition organized by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust. Thorbourne's design 'Tower of Stature' was the unanimous choice of the judges, according to Senator The Hon. Oswald Harding who gave the judges' report at a ceremony to award the top three competitors at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston on Wednesday, December 13, 2007.

The winning entry had "a strong design concept, good artistic expression, was extremely buildable, offered ease of maintenance and was the most complete of all the entries." Senator Harding said in his report.

The design showed two intersecting wings, widening as they rise, signifying Mr. Shearer's dual achievements as trade unionist and politician/diplomat while recalling his tall physical stature. The design had grooves at points along the monument identifying career landmarks of the former Prime Minister.

A Rotarian, in addition to heading his own architectural firm, Mr. Thorbourne is also a singer, composer, arranger and plays keyboard and guitar. He has been Deputy Director of the Methodist Chorale for many years.

Second place in the design competition was awarded to Mr. Christopher Whyms-Stone of Corner Stone Designs while third place went to Mr. Robin Baston Associates. All three competitors are members of the Jamaica Institute of Architects.

For Mr. Thorbourne, winning the competition was especially sweet as this was his fourth attempt to design a monument for the National Heroes Park. His closest previous attempt was when he placed third in the competition to design the monument to the Rt. Excellent Sir Alexander Bustamante.

Guest Speaker, Minister of Health and the Environment Hon. Rudyard Spencer invited those present to "view the creation of this monument as the latest means to stir our memories of a man whose courage and love for Jamaica were unquestioned.

His greatest struggle for the weak and disadvantaged took place in the trade union movement and in particular the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU). He was as consistent as he was courageous in placing and keeping workers' rights at the front burner of the national agenda," Minister Spencer remembered of Mr. Shearer.

Minister of Information, Culture Youth and Sports Olivia Grange welcomed those in attendance among who were Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon. Ken Baugh and Mrs. Baugh, Minister Dwight Nelson, House Leader Delroy Chuck, Minister of Education Andrew Holness, Tom Tavares Finson, Professor Denise Eldemire Shearer widow of the late prime minister, former JNHT Chairman Professor Verene Shepherd, Director of Culture Mr. Sydney Bartley, IOJ Executive Director Vivian Crawford, Seragh and Effie Lakasingh.

The monument which is being built by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust, in the National Heroes Park, is slated to be unveiled on July 5, 2008 on the fourth anniversary of Mr. Shearer's death. Hugh Lawson Shearer was Jamaica's third prime minister who served from 1967-1972.

The Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT) recently paid tribute to four members of staff who together have served the organisation for a combined total of 81 years. Sadly, two of the tributes were posthumous as the honourees died in a matter of weeks prior to the December 10 event. In their memory, the staff had a minute's silence.

Executive Director of the JNHT Laleta Davis-Mattis welcomed everyone to the event which took the form of a luncheon at the Knutsford Court Hotel. While acknowledging the passing of the two members of staff, she also thanked those present for their relentless efforts during 2007 to carry out the mission of the Trust. She further asked that they reflect on their individual roles as guardians of Jamaica's Cultural Heritage as they go into the new year.

Guest speaker at the event was noted author and journalist Barbara Blake Hannah who represented Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Sport the Hon. Olivia Babsy Grange. Mrs. Blake Hannah reminded the organisation of its importance in preserving and promoting the nation's heritage. She noted that the general view out there is that Jamaica's history begins just over 300 years ago. This she stated was not true as the 300 years was but a blip in our long and glorious past which began in Africa. She charged the JNHT with the task of letting Jamaicans know that their history transcends "the historical blip of the past 300 years."

The honourees

When it was time to honour the retirees, a somber atmosphere descended on the event. The wife of Renford Clarke could not hold back the years as she listened to the tribute being paid to her husband on December 10, 2007 at the Knutsford Court Hotel. Mr. Clarke scheduled to retire on December 31, 2007 when he died in hospital. Because of his stature, he was affectionately called 'Little Man' by the staff and those who knew him. Assigned to Spanish Town Heritage District he always performed his task with dignity and of a high standard.

Mrs. Alena Clarke proudly receives an award from the Jamaica National Heritage Trust's (JNHT) director of Estate Management and Business Development Gavern Tate, on behalf of her husband Renford Clarke, who was posthumously honoured for his years of service to the JNHT.

The family of the late Arthur Phillips sat upright, with quiet dignity, much like the man whom they came to represent, as they listened to the tribute paid to their father. A beloved member of the JNHT security staff, Mr. Phillips passed away on December 2, one week before the function. Mr. Phillips was described as a model worker whose vigilance, laughter, gentleman qualities and charm earned him the love and respect of all. He served the JNHT and its predecessor the Jamaica National Trust Commission for over 40 years.

Lisa Phillips accepts an award on behalf of her father Arthur Phillips from Maurice Lewin, Human Resource Manager of the Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT) at the organisation's Christmas luncheon at the Knutsford Court Hotel on December 10. Mr. Phillips served the JNHT and the Jamaica Trust Commission for over 40 years and was scheduled to retire at the end of December 2007.

Sadness aside, the afternoon drew much laughter especially when it was time to toast the effervescent Roderick Ebanks, the retiring Technical Director of Archaeology. Mr. Ebanks joined the JNHT team in 1985 but he worked with the Jamaica National Trust Commission (the predecessor of the JNHT) from as early as 1974. Known affectionately as the JNHT's Santa Claus, he seemed to love the nickname brought on by his jocular personality, fluffy white beard and ever growing paunch. The fact that he was seen with a side order of ham when everyone knew him to be a devout Seventh Day Adventist (he was passing it to another staff member), earned him much ribbing and set off a few cameras.

Mr. Ebanks was lauded for his 22 years of service during which he acted as Executive Director on more than one occasion. His distinguished service is highlighted by his restructuring of the Archaeological Division and the many programmes and projects he implemented while the Division carried out its work of unearthing, conserving and preserving Jamaica's heritage. Among the projects Ebanks was credited for was the JNHT's role in conducting Archaeological Impact Assessments, similar to Environmental Impact Assessments, that informs the way large developmental projects are carried out on heritage sites. He ensured that his Division made use of new and available technologies such in their work, developed and maintained a database of research on the African Jamaican community as well as organized Jamaica's hosting for the first time, of the 22nd International Association of Caribbean Archaeology Conference in July 2007. Internationally, Roderick is known as an expert on the history of African Jamaican ceramics.

In a citation to the man, the JNHT saluted Roderick Ebanks and thanked him for his long and dedicated service in archaeology and heritage preservation and for being an exemplary leader, friend, loyal employee and historian.

Roderick Ebanks accepts an award from Executive Director of the Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT) Laleta Davis-Mattis at the organisation's end of year event. Mr. Ebanks served the JNHT for 22 years and is retiring this year.

The sole female retiree honoured on the night was Joan Seagears, who worked at the Seville Heritage Park in St. Ann as Operations Manager. Many members of staff at the JNHT could not believe that Mrs. Seagears had reached the age of retirement and were quite shocked when she left earlier this year. Mrs. Seagears was credited for her exemplary work especially in the planning and execution of the organisation's key events such as its annual Emancipation Jubilee at the Seville site.

A confident optimist, hardworking and dedicated, Joan Seagears joined the staff of the JNHT in January 1996 as Heritage Education Office at Seville Heritage Park. Her encapsulating persona, creativity, result-oriented disposition, team skills and resourcefulness later paid off as she was promoted to Operation's Manager, a task that she performed with distinction, while ably maintaining the respect of staff, the community and key stakeholder groups in the parish of St. Ann.

A citation to Mrs. Seagears thanked her for her role in enabling the Jamaica National Heritage Trust to meet its mandate of preserving, protecting, restoring, maintaining and promoting the heritage of the Jamaican people.

Several other members of staff were awarded for their role in the organisation over the past year. One that drew much applause was the award to messenger David Rodney for his consistent early arrival to work. There were also spot prizes and surprises for staff members throughout the evening.
