Criteria & Guidelines for Entry

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION: May 30, 2006
To mark the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the trans-Atlantic Trade in Enslaved Africans, the Jamaica National Bicentenary Planning Committee has launched a logo competition. The winning Logo should reflect the official slogan for the year –  “Our Freedom Journey … Honouring our Ancestors – as well as the purpose outlined below:

1.ELIGIBILITY
The competition will be divided into two categories:

  • Youth
  • Open /Adult

A. The Youth category will be sub-divided into:

  • CHILD [ up to 12 years]
  • JUNIOR [13-15 years]
  • SENIOR [16 to 18 years]

B. Open (Public) Category /Adult Section is open to all Jamaicans over 18 years.
2.PURPOSE
The Purpose of the competition is :

“To honour our ancestors through the promotion of increased awareness of their importance in the abolition of the Trans-Atlantic Trade in Enslaved Africans and to the development of our history and culture.”

3.GUIDELINES

 

    1. Each entrant must determine his/her own area of focus and present an interpretation of an original logo. The logo must, however, reflect the spirit of the official slogan and purpose (see above)

 

    1. Entrants may submit more than one original logo. However, each entry must be accompanied by a separate entry form.

 

    1. Youth Entries which are school driven, must be certified by the Principal or any authorized school official.

 

    1. All entrants will be asked to verify their work as a true original work.

 

    1. Each logo must be accompanied by a summary description of 50-100 words, typed and double-spaced or clearly handwritten on letter-sized paper. This summary should be an explanation of the entrant’s reasons for choosing the particular design for his/her logo and should relate to the slogan and purpose. This explanation must be tagged with the child’s/youth’s or adult’s full name, address, telephone number and date of birth.

 

    1. The artwork is to be mounted on card stock (e.g. Bristol) or poster/illustration (matte) board; Size 12”x18”. It must bear an identifying label with the entrant’s full name, address, and date of birth.

 

Entrants must bear in mind that a suitable logo design should be able to be enlarged and reduced without losing impact or quality. The artwork must also reproduce well in both black and white and colour.

Members of staff of the Ministry of Tourism, Entertainment and Culture, and its agencies (JTB, TPDCO., JNHT, JCDC, IOJ ) the members of the Jamaica National Bicentenary Planning Committee and sub Committees and their families are not eligible to enter the competition.

Family members of the judges are also ineligible to enter.
