Monument to the Rt. Excellent Nanny
The Rt. Excellent Nanny

The Monument to the Rt. Excellent Nanny of the Windward Maroons was designed by Compass Workshop Limited and was dedicated on October 14, 1999.

Central to the theme of the Monument is the sound produced by the main vertical structure. Evolving the sound of the abeng through kinetic action of the wind against the 'face' of the figure, the element gives a voice to the forms.

The sound of the abeng, so critical to the Maroons' tactics against the English soldiers, echoes metaphorically through the module plan which rises in spiral formation to the base of the monument. The secondary vertical structures symbolize Nanny surrounded by her Maroon Guerilla Warriors
