Lucea Town Hall

May pen Clock Tower
Lucea Town Hall

Parish: Hanover

Lucea Town Hall is in the heart of the bustling town of Lucea. It was constructed around 1840 and originally served as the town’s court house in an outstanding Jamaican-Georgian style. It has walls of stone on the ground floor and of wood on the upper. The lower floor has a well balanced series of arches giving access to a verandah. There is a central passage from which access to the offices is gained; at the end is a stairway which leads to the upper floor. The building is topped by an unusual clock tower. It appears as though an existing window was modified to accommodate the clock face at the front. It is believed that the tower was specifically built for the three-faced clock. The clock tower is crowned by a Germanic helmet, complete with a spike, supported by eight Corinthian columns.

The Lucea Town Hall and Clock Tower is an important visual object that has acquired for the community a special sentimental value. It now houses the offices of the Hanover Parish Council. The town’s restored Town Hall is in good condition and the original design features have not been depreciated by alterations.
